Sunpave: Innovative for Solar Panel Technology at Al Thumama Stadium

Al Thumama Stadium, one of the eight stadiums for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which will continue until December 18, is witnessing the use of innovative solar panel technology (SunPave), which was installed in the area surrounding the stadium to serve the fans of the matches.

"SunPave" technology was among the winning projects in the "Challenge 22" program, which was launched by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy in preparation for hosting the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, with the aim of promoting innovation in the Arab world, by encouraging youth in the region to launch their creative ideas, and help develop and transform them into products, tools and solutions that enhance the fans experience during the first edition of the World Cup in the Arab world and the Middle East.

SunPave panels, which operate with the same efficiency as regular solar panels, are designed for use on horizontal floors and vertical walls, in order to generate clean electric energy.

Al Thumama Stadium was chosen to install solar panels as a pilot project for the innovative technology in light of the stadium's achievements in terms of environmental sustainability, while the rest of the World Cup stadiums will witness the installation of innovative panels after the curtain falls on the championship competitions.

Fans attending the tournament matches at Al Thumama Stadium can charge their mobile devices, through modern charging sockets powered by solar energy, resulting from the use of SunPave panels in the vicinity of the stadium.

Engineer Khalifa Al-Mana, Director of Al-Thumama Stadium, said that the installation of Sunpave panels in the World Cup stadium embodies the commitment of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy to take into account aspects of sustainability and environmental protection in the facilities and sites of the tournament, in an effort to build a legacy that will benefit future generations, and be reflected in the country's future after the end of the World Cup competitions.

For his part, Mr. Mohammed Al-Jamal, co-founder of Sunpave, expressed his happiness with the installation of solar panels in the vicinity of Al-Thumama World Cup Stadium.

As he said, "We are pleased to equip the area surrounding the stadium with solar panels, and we are proud to see the fans using these panels during Qatar's hosting of the World Cup 2022."

He added, "We succeeded in creating a product that has many advantages, by producing solar panels that people can walk on, allowing us to take advantage of large areas across the country to generate electricity."

The problem with traditional solar panels is that the space they occupy becomes practically unusable, but with the innovative SunPave panels, we can benefit from solar energy without negatively affecting the space, as pedestrians can walk on it.
