2 Dead, 3 Injured in Tragic SUV Crash at NAIA Terminal 1

A quiet morning at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 turned into tragedy on Monday, May 5, when a black SUV plowed through a group of people at the departure area. Two people died, including a five-year-old girl, while three others were injured, according to airport and government officials.

Victims Were Bidding Goodbye to Departing Family

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon confirmed that the young girl, the daughter of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW), was at the airport with her father to send off family members when the accident happened.

“It’s heartbreaking,” Dizon said, adding that he spoke with the grieving father. “He was just there to drop off his wife and daughter. Now he’s lost his child.”

SUV Jumped the Railings and Hit People

The vehicle was reportedly parked near the terminal entrance when it suddenly accelerated around 8 a.m. It crashed through the outer railing and struck the crowd gathered outside the terminal doors. Authorities say the SUV’s driver is now in police custody.

New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), the airport’s operator, said the area has been secured and is currently under full investigation by security personnel and the Philippine National Police.

Investigation Ongoing, Support Offered to Victims

While the crash doesn’t appear to be intentional, authorities are still checking what caused the vehicle to speed forward. NNIC President Ramon Ang called the incident “deeply tragic” and promised to assist affected families.

“We’ll cover all medical costs and give financial help to the families of the victims,” Ang said.
