Qatar-Born Residents and Children of Qatari Mothers Can Now Apply for National Service

 In a significant policy shift, the State of Qatar has expanded eligibility for its mandatory national service programme to include long-term residents born in the country and the children of Qatari mothers. The Ministry of Defence announced the change on Monday, opening recruitment to demographic groups that were previously excluded from the scheme.

The decision marks a major evolution in Qatar's approach to national integration, offering eligible participants not only a monthly financial allowance but also a potential pathway to permanent residency.

New Eligibility Criteria

Under the updated regulations, the programme is now open to both men and women who meet specific criteria:

• Age and Status: Applicants must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid Qatari residency permit.
• Birth and Lineage: Eligibility now explicitly covers non-Qatari residents who were born within Qatar's borders, as well as offspring of Qatari mothers.
• Conduct: Candidates must possess a clean conduct record, with no convictions for felonies, crimes involving dishonesty, or moral turpitude. An exception is made for those who have been legally rehabilitated.
• Service History: Applicants cannot have been previously dismissed from any form of service.
• Medical and Interview Standards: Prospective recruits must be deemed medically fit by the Ministry of Defence's Military Medical Committee and successfully pass an admission interview.

Financial Incentives and Career Prospects

To encourage participation, the Ministry outlined a robust compensation package. Participants will serve for a maximum period of five years. During this tenure, they will receive a monthly allowance that scales up over time, reaching a peak of QR 7,000 by the final year of service.

Beyond the financial rewards, the announcement highlighted long-term benefits for those who complete their term. Graduates of the programme will be granted priority consideration for:

1. Recruitment into the Qatari Armed Forces.
2. Acquisition of permanent residency status, providing a rare and valuable opportunity for stability and future settlement in the Gulf nation.
