What You Need to Know About Qatar National Sports Day

Qatar National Sports Day is celebrated on the second Tuesday in February. This year, it takes place on February 14th. Here is what you need to know about the day.

1. History

The first national sports day in Qatar was organized in February 2012.

2. Who declared it

The day had been proclaimed by the Deputy Emir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, upon realizing that the modern lifestyle doesn't leave much room for living a more active life and getting fit.

3. It is a public holiday 

National Sports Day is a public holiday in Qatar where schools, businesses, shops, and offices are closed for the day. 

4. Main purpose

The event aims to promote the role that sport plays in creating a hearty lifestyle, with the objective to promote healthy living among the Qatari population.

5. Organizers

On the day, over a hundred government ministries and private organizations encourage their employees to participate in several sporting events organized by them, including football, basketball, tennis, taekwondo, cycling, and swimming.

6. Participants 

It is an inclusive event where people of all ages and abilities are encouraged to participate in the sporting activities with colleagues and family.  

7. How to celebrate it

You can celebrate the day by playing sports, and exercising. The day encourages you to take some time off your schedule and relax by playing your favorite sports.

8. It is a rare celebration

Qatar is one of the few countries that have a national sports day. Other countries that celebrate national sports days include India, Japan, Malaysia, and South Korea.
