Qatar Confirms Bid Dialogue for 2036 Olympics and Paralympics

Qatar just made a bold move toward Olympic history. The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has officially entered into ongoing discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as part of the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games host city selection process.

This step isn’t just about bringing the world’s biggest sports event to the Middle East for the first time ever — it’s about using sport to inspire, empower, and connect.

Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the QOC and Chair of the Bid Committee, explained the bigger picture:

“Our participation... reflects a national vision that sees sport as a driver of development and a platform for promoting mutual understanding and peace among nations.”

Qatar says it’s already 95% ready in terms of sporting infrastructure and has a full plan in place to be 100% set by the time the Games roll around. But this isn’t just a checklist. It’s part of a long-term national strategy focused on sustainability, youth engagement, and creating a legacy that lasts well beyond closing ceremonies.

If successful, Qatar’s bid would bring the Olympics and Paralympics to the MENA region for the first time, offering what it calls “a new model” — one that reflects the diversity and authentic values of the Arab world.

Qatar’s vision isn’t just theoretical. The country has serious experience when it comes to global sports — from the FIFA World Cup 2022™ to dozens of world championships across various disciplines. Coming up: the ISSF World Shooting Championship 2026, FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027, and the 2030 Asian Games in Doha.

The QOC stressed that its vision for the 2036 Games goes far beyond hosting — it’s about innovation, youth empowerment, and building a Games that speaks to global challenges like sustainability and inclusion.

And while the final decision is still down the line, Qatar’s commitment is clear. With its eyes on the future, the country hopes to show the world what the Olympic spirit looks like — MENA style.
