Qatar to Launch Three Water Taxi Routes for Coastal Connectivity

Qatar is preparing to introduce three water transport routes as part of its comprehensive coastal development plans. The initiative is aimed at enhancing accessibility to significant spots from Al Khor to Al Wakrah, offering an environmentally friendly transit alternative.

The project aligns with Qatar’s 2050 Transportation Master Plan, which evaluates the necessity and potential of ferry services. This plan focuses on connecting residential, commercial, and recreational areas along the coast, providing easier access to key destinations such as Doha and West Bay.

An early proposal under the master plan outlined a continuous passenger ferry service linking Hamad Port and Doha Port, with additional stops at Hamad International Airport (HIA), Al Wakrah, and QEZ 3 (Umm Al Houl, near Hamad Port). Officials emphasized that these services aim to seamlessly integrate various hubs of activity.

Recent updates to the plan have expanded beyond these initial routes, proposing broader water transport connectivity along the coast. The latest addition seeks to establish services stretching from Doha Port to Lusail, and further north to Al Khor.

The anticipated water taxi network will consist of three distinct lines: the Al Khor Water Transport Line, the HIA Water Transport Line, and the Al Wakrah Transport Line. These services are expected to revolutionize coastal mobility, supporting sustainable transportation and boosting connectivity in Qatar’s urban and suburban regions.
