Qatari Supermarket Bans Swedish Products After Quran Burning in Sweden

The Qatari supermarket chain Souq Al Baladi removed all Swedish products from its shelves after the recent attacks on the Quran in Sweden.

A video of the event has been circulating on social media. 

The supermarket has also announced that it will launch a full-fledged boycott of Swedish products.

In June, an Iraqi Salwan Momika burnt the Quran in Sweden after receiving permission from Swedish authorities and received backlash from various Muslim-majority countries. 

Momika stepped on the Quran again in front of the Iraqi embassy in Sweden on Thursday, Jul. 20, while a similar action was carried out in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The supermarket chain's ban might elicit a similar response from other businesses in Qatar and in other countries. 

A similar call to boycott French products was made in 2020 following French President Emmanuel Macaron's support of cartoon caricatures of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.).

During that time, French exports to Qatar decreased by 59 percent. The value of sales to Qatar decreased from $4.2 million in 2019 to $1.7 million in 2020.
