During his 18 years as Amir, from 1995 to 2013, he guided Qatar through an amazing journey of growth. His vision created the modern nation we see today, establishing a strong foundation for future generations.

Early Life and Service

Born in Doha in January 1952, His Highness is one of the most respected and influential leaders in the region.

After graduating from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom in 1971, he returned home to join the Qatar Armed Forces. This marked the start of his lifelong service to his country.

A New Chapter for Qatar

On 27 June 1995, His Highness became the Amir of Qatar. This started a new era of growth, economic success, and strong relations with other countries.

His plan was simple but powerful: build strong institutions, support local people, and create a great future for generations to come.

Focus on Education and People

Education was a top priority for His Highness.

In 1995, he and Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser founded the Qatar Foundation. This foundation supports education, science, and community development.

They also started Qatar Academy, which led to the creation of Education City. Today, this hub hosts top international universities, research centers, and technology parks.

Putting Qatar on the Global Map

His Highness helped Qatar grow its presence around the world.

In 1996, the launch of Al Jazeera gave Qatar a strong voice in international media. Around the same time, the country's gas industry grew rapidly, making Qatar a world leader in energy.

In 1997, Qatar Airways was relaunched. Today, it is one of the best airlines in the world, connecting people across six continents.

Developing Modern Infrastructure

His Highness led major national projects that shaped the country's future:

• 2004: Sidra Medical and Research Center was launched to provide world-class healthcare.
• 2005: Construction began on Hamad International Airport and Lusail City, a smart and sustainable city.
• 2006: Qatar became the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
• 2007: Work started on the massive Hamad Port to boost international trade.

Qatar National Vision 2030

In 2008, the Qatar National Vision 2030 was launched. This plan balances economic growth with social, human, and environmental care.

Two years later, in 2010, Qatar won the bid to host the FIFA World Cup 2022, becoming the first Middle Eastern nation to host the event. In the same year, the sustainable Msheireb Downtown Doha project was started.

Better Transport and Venues

In 2011, the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) opened as a top venue for global events.
