3 Airlines Ban Bluetooth Earphones in Checked Luggage

Three Taiwanese airlines—Uni Air, Tiger Air, and EVA Air—have officially banned Bluetooth earphones in checked baggage due to growing safety concerns linked to lithium-ion batteries.

The airlines stated that Bluetooth earphones, including their charging cases, are categorized as portable electronic devices (PEDs). These devices remain in “standby mode” because of automatic charging functions, meaning they cannot be completely switched off when packed in checked baggage—a requirement under aviation safety regulations.

In a notice on its website, Uni Air emphasized that such devices do not comply with the requirement that PEDs must be completely switched off in checked baggage. Similarly, Tiger Air announced that earphone charging cases are only permitted in hand luggage, while EVA Air has implemented the same precautionary guidelines, according to local media reports.

Lithium-ion batteries are widely restricted on aircraft due to their potential to short-circuit and cause fires. The safety risk was underscored by a recent mid-air incident on an Air China flight from Hangzhou to Incheon, where a fire broke out in an overhead compartment. The blaze, later traced to lithium batteries, was quickly extinguished by cabin crew. No injuries were reported, but the event reignited global discussions on battery safety during air travel.

The move by Taiwanese carriers aligns with international aviation standards and follows similar restrictions by other airlines. In October, UAE flag carrier Emirates also prohibited the use of power banks during flights. While passengers can still carry power banks in their hand luggage, charging devices onboard or packing them in checked baggage remains strictly forbidden.

As safety protocols evolve, passengers are advised to check airline-specific regulations regarding electronic devices before traveling to ensure compliance and avoid delays.
