Storms Hit Gaza, Flood Thousands and Knock Out Solar Power

A powerful winter storm has swept across Gaza, flooding tents, collapsing shelters, and leaving thousands struggling in freezing conditions. Heavy rain and days of cloud cover have knocked out solar power — the enclave’s crucial lifeline since the electricity grid was destroyed years ago.

Residents are left in darkness, with phones and small batteries dead, cutting off communication and basic daily functions.

Solar Power Struggles

Mohammed Abu Shanab runs a solar-charging station in Gaza city, a lifeline for roughly 100 people daily. “Yesterday, today and tomorrow I am closed because there is no sun,” he said, describing both the economic and community impact.

For many families, solar energy is no longer a convenience — it’s survival. Without sunlight, tents remain dark, and phones die, leaving people isolated from news, work, and connection.

Families Face Cold and Isolation

Lu’ay Abu Shaar, a 29-year-old father, described how his family has had to ration electricity: “We haven’t been able to charge our phones or light our tents. The simplest things are now impossible.”

Children shiver in soaked clothing, parents struggle to keep warm, and emergency calls spike as civil defence teams try to cope with the widespread impact.

Floods and Humanitarian Strain

Thousands of tents across Gaza were inundated. Medics reported that eight-month-old Rahaf Abu Jazar died from exposure after her family’s tent flooded in Khan Younis. Entire camps in areas like Mawasi, Bassa, Baraka, and Nuseirat were affected, leaving residents scrambling in mud and cold.

Civil defence officials confirmed over 2,500 emergency calls and warned that families are drowning in floods despite ongoing humanitarian appeals.
