The disruption began on Monday night after Iran launched a missile attack on Al Udeid Air Base in Doha, in response to U.S. involvement in Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. The incident briefly escalated tensions in the Gulf region, prompting Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain to temporarily close their airspace. Dubai’s two airports also paused operations for a short period.

The airspace closures led to the diversion of over 90 Qatar Airways flights and created a major backlog at Doha’s Hamad International Airport, where thousands of travelers were left facing long delays and flight cancellations.

Qatar Airways CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer shared in an open letter that more than 11,000 of the affected passengers resumed their journeys during the morning of June 24. The rest were flown out during the evening wave and the following morning. “As of today, there are no passengers from diverted flights left stranded,” he said on June 26.

At the time of the missile strike, more than 10,000 passengers were already in transit at the airport. In response to the crisis, the airline activated its business continuity plan, ramping up capacity to key destinations and working around the clock to clear the backlog.

By Wednesday, normal operations had resumed at Hamad International Airport, with minimal delays and no major crowds, according to on-the-ground reports.

Qatar Airways, which transported over 43 million passengers in the year ending March 2025, was widely praised for its swift response in managing one of the largest mass rebooking efforts in recent years.
