Protesters Rally Across Metro Manila Over Corruption in Flood Control Projects

Protesters took to the streets of Metro Manila early Sunday to denounce alleged corruption in government flood control projects. At the EDSA People Power Monument in Quezon City, demonstrators led by Akbayan Party-list Representatives Chel Diokno and Perci Cendaña marched from the EDSA Shrine, arriving at around 9 a.m.

Prominent Figures Join the Rally

Joining the rally were Senator Kiko Pangilinan, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, and Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong. Sereno led a prayer during the program, while labor groups also participated in the so-called “Trillion Peso March.”

Rally Hurdles in Manila

In Manila, police initially blocked protesters from setting up at Rizal Park (Luneta), citing the absence of a rally permit. Bayan criticized the move, calling it an attempt to disrupt protests and silence calls for accountability.

Mayor Isko Moreno clarified that the city government supports the right to protest and will assist as usual. He noted that Roxas Boulevard is under MMDA jurisdiction and Luneta is overseen by the National Parks Development Committee, urging organizers to coordinate with the respective agencies. Later, the Manila Police District allowed a brief 15-minute program at Kilometer Zero near the Rizal Monument.

Government Action on Flood Project Irregularities

Amid widespread flooding in recent months, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered an investigation into alleged irregularities in flood control projects. Both the Senate and House of Representatives have launched separate inquiries to scrutinize the issue further.
