Over 60 Confirmed Dead After 6.9-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Cebu

Cebu is reeling from a massive 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck late Tuesday night, September 30. The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) confirmed Wednesday morning that fatalities have already climbed past 60—and officials warn the number could still go up as rescue efforts continue.

Many of the deaths were reported from a hospital in Bogo City, one of the hardest-hit areas near the quake’s epicenter.

Golden Hour Response

Authorities say the country is still within the “golden hour,” the critical window after a disaster when swift action can save lives. Red alert has been raised, with full rescue teams deployed to pull survivors from collapsed buildings.

Hardest-Hit Areas

Cebu Governor Pam Baricuatro reported that Bogo, home to around 90,000 residents, bore the brunt of the damage. By 9:30 a.m., the city’s operations center logged 53 deaths and 154 injuries spread across Bogo, Medellin, San Remigio, Sogod, and Tabuelan.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) also recorded damage to 22 structures and at least six roads and bridges. Homes, shops, and even churches were left in ruins.

State of Calamity Declared

Cebu has been placed under a state of calamity, unlocking 30% of its local quick response fund for relief and rehabilitation.

The Quake’s Strength

The tremor struck at a shallow depth north of Bogo, hitting Intensity VII on the ground—close to the destructive force of the dreaded “Big One” (7.2 magnitude) projected along Metro Manila’s West Valley Fault.

For now, rescue teams continue the race against time, hoping to save more lives before the golden hour runs out.
