Everything to Know About the Incident at Ras Laffan Industrial City

A significant explosion has occurred at Qatar's Ras Laffan Industrial City, injuring dozens of workers and leaving others unaccounted for in an incident that has raised concerns about the facility's stability amid regional recovery efforts.

Casualties and Response

Fifty-four individuals have been confirmed injured following the explosion, with eighteen people still listed as missing according to official reports. Qatar's interior ministry confirmed that the Qatar International Search and Rescue Group, alongside civil defence teams, are actively conducting search operations to locate the missing personnel.

Emergency response teams were deployed immediately after the incident was reported on Sunday evening. Operators have since stated that the fire has been brought under control. The interior ministry confirmed there were no hazardous leaks posing a threat to public safety.

Cause of Explosion

QatarEnergy, the operator of the facility, described the event as an operational incident occurring during the start-up of operations at the Barzan local gas supply facility. The interior ministry attributed the explosion to a technical malfunction during operations at a factory within Ras Laffan Industrial City.

Company officials did not disclose whether the plant sustained damage from the explosion. The facility supplies gas to Qatar's domestic market for power generation purposes.

Facility Context

Ras Laffan holds the distinction of being the world's largest liquefied natural gas refinery. The complex is responsible for supplying approximately one-fifth of global super-chilled fuel, making it a strategically important energy asset for international markets.

This incident follows additional challenges the facility faced earlier in 2026. The complex was struck by Iranian missile attacks in March, which caused severe destruction to parts of the facility. QatarEnergy reported at that time that those strikes damaged Trains 4 and 6, removing 12.8 million tonnes per year from production capacity—equivalent to roughly seventeen percent of Qatar's total LNG exports removed from the market.

Recovery Outlook

The company has been working toward restoring full production at the facility following the March damage. Reports suggest the site may not return to full operational capacity for several months. QatarEnergy has indicated expectations to boost output once the Strait of Hormuz is fully reopened, pending broader regional developments.

As investigations continue into both the recent explosion and its relationship to prior damage, energy analysts are monitoring how the incident may affect global LNG supply chains and Qatar's position in the international energy market.
