If Georgia is on your travel mood board for 2026, here’s a heads-up before you book that flight.

Qatar Airways has issued a travel alert reminding passengers that Georgia will require mandatory health and accident insurance for all tourists starting January 1, 2026. No insurance, no entry — it’s that simple.

What Travelers Need to Show

Under Georgia’s updated tourism law, all visitors must carry a valid health and accident insurance policy for their entire stay.

The policy can be shown digitally or on paper and must be written in English or Georgian. It can be issued by either a local or foreign insurance provider, as long as it meets the requirements.

Minimum Coverage Required

The insurance must have coverage of at least 30,000 Georgian Lari (GEL). It should be valid from your arrival date through your departure, with no gaps in between.

What Must Be Included in the Policy

To be accepted, the insurance document must clearly state:

  • Names of the parties involved

  • Covered territory

  • Insurance coverage dates

  • Risks covered

  • Coverage limits

  • Premium amount and payment details

Who Is Exempt

Not everyone needs to worry about this rule. The insurance requirement does not apply to:

  • Holders of diplomatic or special visas

  • Diplomatic, official, or service passport holders

  • Accredited diplomats and international organization staff, including their families

  • Individuals covered by Georgia’s international agreements

  • Drivers involved in international freight and passenger transport

For everyone else, insurance is now part of the travel checklist.
