Brazil Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Sentenced to 27 Years for Coup Attempt

Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for trying to stage a coup after losing the 2022 election. He’s currently under house arrest in Brasilia and plans to appeal the verdict to the full Supreme Court.

Found Guilty on Five Charges

A panel of five Supreme Court justices handled the case, with four voting to convict. Bolsonaro was found guilty of attempting a coup, joining an armed criminal group, threatening democracy, inciting violence, and endangering public property. He denies the accusations and skipped the hearings, sending only his lawyers.

Divided Reactions at Home and Abroad

The ruling has split Brazil. Some citizens backed the decision, while others rallied in the streets in support of the far-left leader. Meanwhile, Donald Trump, a close ally of Bolsonaro, blasted the conviction as unfair and tied it to tensions over US tariffs on Brazilian imports.

Bolsonaro’s Political Future

Bolsonaro was already banned from running for office until 2030. Despite the conviction, he remains a powerful figure in Brazilian politics and could rally his supporters around a political heir to challenge President Lula da Silva in upcoming elections.
