At least 50 people have died after the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, East Java, collapsed last week. Most of the victims were teenage students who were trapped under piles of concrete when the building gave way.

Rescue Teams Clear the Rubble

By late Sunday, rescuers had cleared about 80% of the debris, uncovering more bodies and body parts from the wreckage. Authorities expect the final death toll to rise as search operations continue for at least 13 missing victims.

Weak Structure Behind Collapse

Officials believe the collapse happened because construction work on the upper floors pushed the building’s weak foundations beyond their limit. The disaster mitigation agency confirmed it’s the single deadliest incident in Indonesia so far this year.

Safety Concerns Over School Buildings

Indonesia’s Religious Affairs Ministry says there are around 42,000 Islamic boarding schools across the country—but only 50 have official building permits. It’s unclear if the Al Khoziny school had one, raising questions about construction safety standards.
