WhatsApp Users in Qatar Warned of Critical Security Flaw — Update Urged

Qatar’s National Cybersecurity Agency (NCSA) has issued an urgent warning to WhatsApp users, urging them to update their app immediately due to a critical security vulnerability announced by Meta.

The flaw, described as “severe” by cybersecurity experts, affects the mechanism that processes message synchronization across linked devices. Attackers can exploit this by sending malicious links, potentially gaining unauthorized access to a user’s device.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, further warned that the risk escalates when the vulnerability is combined with another recently revealed flaw in Apple devices. This particular iOS issue has already been exploited in advanced cyberattacks targeting specific individuals.

Affected Versions:

  • WhatsApp for iOS: prior to v2.25.21.73
  • WhatsApp Business for iOS: prior to v2.25.21.78
  • WhatsApp for Mac: prior to v2.25.21.78

The NCSA emphasized that all users in Qatar should update to the latest version immediately to safeguard their personal data and communications.

“The flaw's severity lies in the mechanism of message synchronization processing between linked devices, allowing cyber attackers to send messages containing malicious links, thereby granting access to the victim's device,” Meta explained.

With WhatsApp being one of Qatar’s most widely used communication platforms, authorities stressed that prompt updates are essential to prevent potential breaches.
