Qatar Pushes to Reopen Gaza’s Rafah Crossing as Ceasefire Talks Continue

Qatar says it is actively talking with international mediators to help reopen the Rafah crossing into Gaza, a critical gateway for humanitarian aid and civilian movement.

The update came from Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs during a press briefing on January 6, 2026.

Qatar Calls for Aid Without Conditions

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Dr. Majed al-Ansari said Qatar is coordinating with mediators to move negotiations toward the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire.

He stressed that humanitarian aid should never be used as leverage, saying Doha has made it clear that relief supplies must reach Gaza without political pressure attached.

Why the Rafah Crossing Matters

Rafah is Gaza’s main connection to the outside world, linking the enclave to Egypt. It became even more critical after Israeli forces took control of the Palestinian side of the crossing in May 2024.

Reopening Rafah was meant to be part of the first phase of the ceasefire that began on October 10, 2025. Despite that agreement, the crossing has remained closed, slowing aid delivery and deepening the humanitarian crisis.

What Happens Next

Qatar says discussions are ongoing, with the goal of reopening Rafah and ensuring aid flows smoothly into Gaza as ceasefire talks continue.

For now, Rafah remains shut—but diplomatic pressure is clearly building.
