Qatar Foundation Wins QR1 Billion Sidra Medicine Dispute

After years of back and forth, Qatar Foundation (QF) just bagged a huge victory in a construction dispute over Sidra Medicine, one of Qatar’s major healthcare projects.

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) ruled in favor of QF, awarding them around QR1 billion (about $275 million) in compensation. An additional amount for legal costs is expected to follow.

The Backstory

The dispute started when QF terminated its contract in 2014 with the joint venture of construction companies behind Sidra Medicine due to repeated delays and defaults.

The contract originally kicked off in 2009, but delays pushed QF to end the deal and take the issue to court.

Failed Appeals from the Contractors

The joint venture tried to overturn partial rulings in QF’s favor in 2018 and 2019 through the High Court of England and Wales—both attempts failed.

What Qatar Foundation Said

QF says this win highlights their commitment to high project standards and accountability. But most importantly, they stressed that their top focus remains on Sidra Medicine’s mission to deliver world-class healthcare for women and children in Qatar and the region.
