Qatar just threw its name into the ring to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games—and if they land it, it’ll be a historic first for the Middle East and North Africa region.

The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) made it official, saying the country already has 95% of the sports facilities ready to go, thanks to their heavy investment in hosting major events like the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

What’s the Plan?

QOC president Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani says this bid isn’t just about sports. It’s part of a bigger plan to build a lasting legacy—from creating new economic opportunities to pushing for social and environmental sustainability.

In short: they want to make the Games more than a global show—they want it to mean something long after the closing ceremony.

But Wait—What About the Heat?

Yeah, Qatar summers are no joke. Think 43°C kinda hot. Like the 2022 World Cup, the Games would likely move to winter if Qatar wins the bid. Expect cool ACs and cooler venues.

Who Else Is in the Race?

It’s a packed competition. Istanbul, Ahmedabad, Nusantara, and Santiago are already in the mix, with big names like Germany, Italy, and South Korea considering bids too.

Qatar previously tried (and missed) in 2016 and 2020, so they’re hoping third time’s the charm.
