Parul Chaudhary Smashes 3000m Steeplechase National Record

Parul Chaudhary is back — and she’s faster than ever. The Indian steeplechase star kicked off her 2025 track season with a bang by setting a new national record in the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the Doha Diamond League 2025 in Qatar on Friday night.

Parul clocked a blazing 9:13.39, shaving nearly two seconds off her own previous record of 9:15.31, which she had set during the 2023 World Championships in Budapest. The 28-year-old finished sixth in a stacked field and notably outran Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai, the Paris 2024 Olympic silver medallist.

More than just a personal best, Parul’s time easily beat the 9:18.00 qualifying mark for the World Athletics Championships, which are set to take place in Tokyo this September.

“I felt very good in the race,” she said post-event. “The weather was also nice. Considering the way I trained, the race went well. This is the first time in two years my season-opener has been good.”

Kenya’s Faith Cherotich clinched gold with a world-leading 9:05.08, followed by Olympic champ Winfred Yavi of Bahrain at 9:05.26.

Also representing India at the Doha meet was Gulveer Singh, who made his Diamond League debut in the men’s 5000m. He finished ninth with a time of 13:24.32. The Asian Games bronze medallist had earlier set a national 5000m record with a 12:59.77 run in Boston.

With this electric start to the season, Parul Chaudhary is clearly one to watch as the countdown to Tokyo begins.
