Major Gen. Nicolas Torre III, who only became PNP chief last June, is officially out. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed off on his relief effective August 25, confirmed by Malacañang on Tuesday, August 26.

Torre’s stint? Not even three months — making it one of the shortest in PNP history.

Why the Boot?

That’s the big mystery. No clear reason was announced. But insiders point to Torre’s clashes with the National Police Commission. He pushed appointments Napolcom had already vetoed — a move some say didn’t sit well with higher powers.

Social media chatter goes even spicier: rumors of Torre crossing a “corrupt official.”

A Big Name in Policing

Torre isn’t just any cop. He’s the first PNP chief from the Police Academy and made headlines for high-profile busts — like the arrest of ex-President Rodrigo Duterte in March 2025 and Pastor Apollo Quiboloy in 2024.

But his track record has its bumps, like a messy Quezon City press con years back involving a rogue cop.

Who’s Next in Charge?

Replacing him is Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., former Ilocos Norte police director. His appointment was confirmed by DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla after a signed order circulated online.

What’s Next for Torre?

Speculation online suggests a possible jump to DPWH. But so far, zero official word, and current DPWH chief Manuel Bonoan is still in post. For now, Torre’s future remains anyone’s guess.
