Fire Erupts at Dhaka Airport Cargo Area, All Flights Temporarily Suspended

All flights at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka were temporarily suspended on Saturday afternoon after a massive fire broke out in the airport’s cargo area, according to officials and local media reports.

The fire began around 2:15 pm, said Biman Bangladesh Airlines spokesperson Kawser Mahmud, prompting a rapid response from multiple agencies. Firefighting teams from the airport’s fire department, the Bangladesh Air Force, and other government agencies were immediately deployed.

As of the latest updates, 28 firefighting units were actively working to control the flames, with additional reinforcements on the way, Dhaka Tribune reported.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed that the Civil Aviation Authority, Fire Service, and two Air Force fire units were coordinating operations to extinguish the blaze.

Cargo Damage Under Assessment

Nasir Uddin, director of the Bangladesh Freight Forwarders Association, told The Business Standard that authorities are currently assessing the extent of cargo damage. He added that “the area storing international courier goods had been severely affected,” while a nearby chemical warehouse also caught fire.

Authorities have reported no immediate casualties or major infrastructure damage, though investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.

The incident has led to temporary disruption of airport operations, with flight schedules expected to resume once safety inspections are completed. Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is the country’s largest and busiest air hub, handling millions of passengers and tonnes of cargo annually.
