Russia Warns Israel-Iran War Could Threaten Nuclear Sites

Russia has issued a strong warning against the ongoing escalation between Israel and Iran, saying the conflict could lead to “unpredictable consequences” if not stopped soon. Moscow’s ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, pointed to the danger of nuclear sites being caught in the crossfire and the rising death toll on both sides.

Despite the growing violence, Nebenzya said Israel has shown no interest in diplomatic talks, making it difficult for mediation efforts to move forward. He called for an immediate halt to the conflict to prevent wider regional fallout.

Moscow’s mediation efforts stall

Although Russia has positioned itself as a potential peace broker, there have been no real steps taken toward formal mediation. President Vladimir Putin reportedly spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump recently, expressing a willingness to help de-escalate the situation. But now, as Iran takes heavy hits from Israel, Moscow has mostly stayed quiet—offering only statements and phone calls. Analysts say Russia is walking a tightrope: trying to maintain its alliance with Iran while protecting its own influence in the region.

Weakened Iran, cautious Russia

Iran’s role in the region, especially in Syria, is shrinking, and experts say Russia doesn’t want to back what looks like a losing side. Instead, it’s focusing on keeping the upper hand in the Middle East, while also managing its war in Ukraine.

According to experts from the Middle East Institute, Russia is likely to avoid any direct involvement, especially if the U.S. joins Israel in taking military action. Moscow’s current priority is keeping its Ukraine conflict going and managing global optics, which means staying neutral—or at least appearing to.

Still, any serious escalation in the Middle East could hurt Russia’s goals, both in Ukraine and across the wider region, especially if it affects trade routes and power balances.
