FIFA Announces the Referees List for The World Cup Qatar 2022

The FIFA Referees Committee announced the lists of match referees selected for the 2022 World Cup.

According to a FIFA statement, 36 referees, 69 assistant referees, and 24 video referees were selected in cooperation with the six continental federations, given the quality of these referees and their performance in FIFA tournaments and other international and local competitions in the past years.

Among the list of referees and assistant referees, 4 Qataris were selected:

Abdul Rahman Al-Jassem, referee

Al-Marri demanded an assistant referee

Saud Ahmed Assistant Referee

Abdullah Al-Marri as referee for the video

The Qatar 2022 edition will be the first in the history of the World Cup in which the FIFA Referees Committee will appoint three women referees and three others as assistants.

Pierluigi Collina, Chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, said: "As always, quality is the first criterion we keep in mind. We will do our best to be able to perform at a similar or better level in the Qatar Championship in a few months."

Collina added: “The pandemic affected our preparations, especially in 2020 and 2021, and fortunately the tournament was still far away, and we had enough time to prepare well-qualified referees, and today we announce in advance the names of the selected referees because we want to guide and work more firmly in the months.” Coming with them, our message is very clear: Do not stop developing yourselves, keep working hard and prepare well for the World Cup.”

FIFA Refereeing Director Massimo Busacca said the referees will have the full support of FIFA so that they can perform perfectly.

He added: "Due to the innovative tracking and support program, FIFA Referee Advisers can supervise all match officials more closely and intensively than in previous years, and this makes us expect an even greater improvement in the performance of FIFA World Cup 2022 referees.

Busacca also said, "There will be programs designed specifically for these. The referees, especially with regard to their health and fitness, will be watching them carefully over the next few months, giving them a final assessment from the technical, physical, and medical aspects with the aim of putting them in the best conditions before the tournament kicks off in Qatar.”

The selected referees will participate in several seminars this summer (in Asuncion, Madrid, and Doha) in order to review and analyze videos of situations that occurred in previous matches and to participate in practical training sessions with the players, which will be filmed and sent to the officials so that they can later give their feedback and opinions to the referees.

Busaka explained that the most important things to focus on in preparation are protecting the players, reading the match from a technical and tactical perspective, and understanding the mentalities of players and teams.

Despite all these efforts, FIFA cannot eliminate all errors, but we will do our best to reduce them.
