The Spaniard was making his first appearance of the season, having missed the opening three races due to a pre-season training injury. Unfortunately, his return didn’t go as planned. On lap 10, Martin lost control of his Aprilia in a fast right-hander and crashed out, visibly in pain as he lay trackside.

Initial Diagnosis Confirms Chest Trauma

Medical checks at the circuit confirmed he had a rib contusion on his right side along with a traumatic pneumothorax, a collapsed lung caused by the impact. Thankfully, no injuries were found in his limbs, and he remained conscious and aware throughout.

MotoGP Doctor Details the Situation

MotoGP medical director Dr. Angel Charte explained, “Jorge had a high-energy crash and bounced on the outside of the track. The radiology showed a pneumothorax, but it’s hard to assess the full extent without a clearer scan due to swelling. He’s been stabilised with painkillers and sent for a CT scan at Hamad General Hospital.”

CT Scan Reveals More Serious Injuries

The CT scan later revealed the pneumothorax had worsened, prompting doctors to keep him in the hospital for further monitoring.

On Monday morning, Aprilia issued a full medical update. It confirmed that Martin sustained eight rib fractures, affecting the back ribs from the 1st to the 8th and side fractures from the 7th to the 9th ribs. The good news: no damage to his brain, spine, or internal organs.

Strong Start to the Weekend Despite Injuries

Martin had shown solid form in the early part of the weekend, qualifying 14th and finishing the Saturday sprint race despite ongoing issues with his left hand. However, during Sunday’s main race, he started in 15th but began to drop back before the crash ended his day.

Martin to Stay in Hospital for Observation

The Aprilia team says Martin will stay in hospital until his lung stabilizes. There’s no timeline yet for his return to racing.
