Trump Outlines Strait of Hormuz Security Plans

US President Donald Trump stated on Monday that a previous agreement with Iran had been broken by Tehran.

"We had a deal. It was a done deal, and then they broke it. They always break it. We've had 10 deals with these people, and so we're just going to hit them very hard," Trump said.

The President suggested that the US might take control of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for regional and global trade, and should receive compensation for managing its security.

"We're going to keep the strait, and we'll probably run it. We'll become the guardian of the strait. Maybe we'll call it the guardian angel of the strait. And we should be reimbursed for that," he said during a phone interview on Fox News' "Fox & Friends" programme.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important maritime routes, especially for global oil supplies. Keeping this pathway open and safe is vital for international energy markets.

"We're going to guard it. We're going to get paid for guarding it - a lot of money," Trump said. "We're going to be reimbursed, because the other nations are very wealthy. They're on our side, and we can't be expected to do that for nothing," he added.

This follows an announcement from Tehran on Sunday, which stated that shipping passage through the waterway remained suspended. Authorities in Iran noted that permits would be issued once "stability and calm" are restored to the region.

Meanwhile, Iran's Revolutionary Guards issued a statement on Monday. They stated that the best way to restore normal shipping traffic is to end military interventions in the area, warning that "continued interference could lead to greater incidents in the global oil and gas sector."
