Sri Lanka is reeling from Cyclone Ditwah, with the death toll climbing to 212 and 218 people still missing. Torrential rains and floods have forced nearly a million residents from their homes, sending around 200,000 people into 1,275 shelters across the island.

Floods and Landslides Hit Hard

Record-breaking rains since last Thursday triggered landslides in central hills and submerged entire towns as rivers overflowed. In Colombo and surrounding areas, families remain trapped in their homes while state agencies and volunteers provide emergency food and aid.

Massive Rescue Operations Underway

Over 24,000 police, army, and air force personnel are involved in rescue missions. More than 120 people were airlifted to safety from the breached Mavil Aru Reservoir, and another 2,000 moved to higher ground. Despite the efforts, many families in shelters report they still lack basic supplies.

“My sister and I were trapped on the upper floor of our home with our four children for two days,” said Sunethra Priyadarshani, 37. “We only had biscuits and water. A boat finally delivered lunch last night.”

Recovery Ahead

Authorities expect flood waters to gradually recede over the next three days, with power, water, and communications slowly being restored.

Regional Impact

The heavy rains aren’t just affecting Sri Lanka. Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand have seen over 600 deaths from floods and landslides, with tens of thousands displaced as relief efforts continue.
