Qatar University and Huawei Launch Artificial Intelligence Laboratory

In a joint event, Qatar University and Huawei inaugurated the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of the Huawei Academy of Information and Communication Technology, which is located on the university's campus. It is expected that this cooperation between the two parties will contribute to advancing the preparation of technical human cadres on the way to strengthening the Qatari economy in line with Qatar Vision 2030, which focuses on talent development in order to build a sustainable and prosperous digital society.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by many relevant officials, dignitaries, and faculty members. The participants toured the lab, which was equipped with the latest technologies to go in line with the digital transformation projects and initiatives in Qatar.

The Artificial Intelligence Lab from the Huawei ICT Academy will provide practical training to Qatar University students on modern technologies, innovations, and advanced solutions from Huawei, in order to enable them to obtain the highest accredited certificates from the company. The laboratory will also contribute to the implementation of research programs at the university, providing the latest technologies and platforms, and promoting innovation through research and joint projects between technical institutions and the university.

In a statement, Dr. Khaled Abdullah Al-Ali, Assistant Undersecretary for Higher Education at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, said: “We are pleased that Qatari universities are cooperating with private companies to enhance education in the country in parallel with the latest developments in technology, as the public sector alone cannot meet the demand for developing Talents and the preparation of qualified human cadres necessary to contribute to the work system for the development of the digital economy.

Al-Ali added, "Through this cooperation, we will be able to enhance the skills of Qatari youth in order to achieve the goals of digital transformation and build a competitive digital economy that can keep pace with market requirements and global trends."

For his part, Dr. Khaled Nagy, Dean of the College of Engineering at Qatar University said: “As one of the leading universities in Qatar, Qatar University plays a major role in supporting the country’s efforts to develop the skills of the workforce. The cooperation with Huawei will provide our students with the necessary knowledge of the latest technical developments and practical skills to meet the requirements of the digital economy, and we will continue to work to enhance this cooperation in light of the increasing demand for digital skills.”

In his turn, Liam Zhao, CEO of Huawei in the North Gulf, said: "Huawei enjoys prosperous and long-term relations with the State of Qatar and many public and private institutions in the country. The opening of the AI laboratory will contribute to building more bridges of cooperation and joint work on developing the ecosystem of technical talents. We are confident that our ICT Academy and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory will play a vital role in achieving Qatar’s social and economic development goals by making the most of technology.”

It is worth noting that Huawei is a Chinese manufacturer of telecommunications equipment and consumer electronics, headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.
