Qatar Former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Dies

The state-run Qatar News Agency has announced the passing of the former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, at the age of 74.

The Amiri Diwan (Emir's Office) released an official statement on Sunday mourning the loss of the former leader, who ruled the country from 1995 to 2013.

"With hearts steadfast in faith in God's decree and destiny, the Bureau of the Emir mourns the great loss to the nation of the late — may God have mercy on him — His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani," the statement read.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is widely recognized as the main architect of modern Qatar. During his 18-year rule, he transformed the nation into a global hub for business, diplomacy, and media, leading the country through a period of rapid economic growth.

Under his leadership, Qatar established major global projects, including the founding of the Al Jazeera satellite news network in 1996 and key international investments. In June 2013, he made a historic decision by voluntarily handing over power to his son, the current Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
