President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will travel to Rome on Saturday, April 27, to attend the funeral of Pope Francis, who passed away last week at the age of 88. First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos will accompany him on the trip.

While Malacañang has not yet released a full itinerary, the Palace confirmed the President’s decision to make the visit, describing it as a personal gesture of respect to the late pontiff, who led the Catholic Church for over a decade.

“The Best Pope in My Lifetime,” Says Marcos

Following the announcement of the Pope’s death, President Marcos expressed deep sorrow and praised the late pontiff's influence. “I love this Pope. The best Pope in my lifetime,” Marcos said.

Global Leaders Expected at the Funeral

Leaders from across the world are expected to attend the funeral, including former U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, French President Emmanuel Macron, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Prince William.

The funeral Mass will take place in St. Peter’s Square, with the burial scheduled at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major—one of Rome’s most historic churches, and the site chosen by Pope Francis as his final resting place.

Mourning Around the Globe

The Vatican has declared an official period of mourning, with thousands visiting St. Peter’s Basilica to offer prayers. Tributes continue to pour in from political leaders, faith communities, and Catholic followers who remember the Pope not just as a religious figure, but as a symbol of unity and compassion.
