A magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit off the coast of Manay, Davao Oriental, at 7:12 p.m. on October 10, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
It came only hours after a magnitude 7.5 tremor shook parts of Mindanao earlier that day.

Phivolcs said the quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 37 kilometers, warning that aftershocks and damage were likely.

Areas That Felt the Shake

The tremor was strongest in Manay, Davao Oriental, with Intensity VI, while nearby towns such as Baganga, Boston, Caraga, Cateel, and Tarragona felt it at Intensity V.

It was also felt as far as Leyte, Tacloban, Cagayan de Oro, and parts of Northern Samar, showing just how wide the impact was across the southern and central Philippines.

Tsunami Warning Raised

Right after the quake, Phivolcs issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas in Surigao del Sur, Davao Oriental, and Surigao del Norte, advising residents to evacuate to higher ground immediately.

Phivolcs: It’s Not Just an Aftershock

Phivolcs clarified that since both earthquakes were stronger than magnitude 6.4, the second one can’t be considered an aftershock.
Instead, they said the events could be a “doublet earthquake” — when two major quakes occur close together in time and location, caused by faults or trenches releasing stress in quick succession.
