Kerala-Made Blue Carpet Steals Spotlight at Met Gala 2025

This year’s Met Gala wasn’t just about fashion — it was about culture, history, and craftsmanship. The annual event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art embraced the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” spotlighting Black creativity and legacy in fashion.

But it wasn’t only the outfits that made waves. A massive blue carpet covering over 63,000 square feet caught everyone’s attention — and it came all the way from Kerala, India.

A made-in-Kerala carpet makes Met Gala history

The eye-catching blue carpet, crafted by Neytt by Extraweave, marked the third year the Kerala-based brand was tapped for the event. Made from sustainable sisal fibers sourced from Madagascar, the carpet combined visual impact with eco-conscious design.

Golden daffodils, mirror-like floral details, and soft lighting added to the immersive setup, transforming the museum's steps into a glowing runway.

Fashion, performance, and a deeper message

The night opened with a live performance of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” setting an upbeat mood as stars arrived. Co-chairs Lewis Hamilton and Colman Domingo led the way, dressed in sharp interpretations of the theme. Attendees followed with standout looks that blended classic tailoring with bold, expressive twists.

The exhibition dives deep into Black fashion history

Curated by Andrew Bolton and inspired by Monica L. Miller’s Slaves to Fashion, the exhibit focused on the concept of the Black dandy — someone who uses style as a form of identity and resistance. From custom tailoring to vibrant color choices, the showcase explored how fashion becomes a tool for storytelling and empowerment.

Met Gala 2025 was more than just a red (or in this case, blue) carpet event. It was a celebration of identity, artistry, and global craftsmanship — with Kerala’s sustainable carpet front and center.
