Bangladesh Air Force Jet Crashes Into School Campus

A routine military flight ended in disaster on Monday when a Bangladesh Air Force F-7 BGI training aircraft crashed into Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Uttara district, killing at least 19 people and injuring more than 50 others.

The fighter jet took off at 1:06 PM local time before spiraling down into the school’s campus just minutes later. A thick plume of smoke was seen billowing into the sky from the crash site, as panicked residents and students looked on in horror.

The crash triggered a massive fire, and dozens — including both children and adults — were rushed to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery with serious injuries, according to attending physicians.

The exact death toll is still unconfirmed, with a military spokesperson saying that efforts are ongoing to account for all victims.

Bangladesh’s interim Prime Minister, Muhammad Yunus, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, calling the incident “irreparable” and promising swift action.

“The loss suffered by the Air Force... students, parents, teachers and staff, and others in this accident is irreparable,” he said, adding that “necessary measures” would be taken to investigate the cause.

Reports from local media outlet Prothom Alo suggest that the aircraft may have struck the roof of the college canteen before bursting into flames, though this detail remains unverified.

The tragic crash has sparked comparisons to last month’s aviation disaster in neighboring India, where an Air India flight slammed into a medical college hostel in Ahmedabad, killing 260 people, including 19 on the ground.

The Bangladesh Air Force, alongside government officials, has launched a formal investigation to determine what caused the crash and whether any technical faults or procedural lapses were involved.

As the country reels from the devastating loss, tributes are pouring in for the victims — many of whom were simply attending class when tragedy struck from above.
