Australia will formally recognise a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly next month, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Monday. The move follows similar steps by France, Malta, and conditional commitments from the UK and Canada.

Push for a Two-State Solution

Albanese said the decision is meant to support momentum for a two-state solution, a ceasefire in Gaza, and the release of hostages. Recognition will depend on Palestinian Authority assurances, including no role for Hamas in any future state.

A Political, Not Military, Answer

Speaking after a cabinet meeting, Albanese stressed that “a political solution is humanity's best hope” to end the cycle of violence. He told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week that military control of Gaza was not the answer.

Growing International Pressure

Australia criticised Israel’s settlement expansion and annexation threats, saying they undermine peace prospects. Albanese called this an opportunity to isolate Hamas, backed by Arab League demands for the group to step aside in Gaza.
