Qatar’s Ministry of Transport (MoT) has officially launched the Karwa Electric Robotaxis in Doha, marking a major milestone in the country’s journey toward intelligent and sustainable mobility. With this move, Doha becomes one of the first cities in the region to introduce self-driving vehicles powered by advanced autonomous technology.

According to the Government Communications Office (GCO), the initiative highlights Qatar’s commitment to innovation, safety, and environmental sustainability within its public transport system.
Aligned with the Qatar National Vision 2030, the project takes advantage of the country’s cutting-edge infrastructure and expansive 5G network to develop smart city solutions that adhere to the highest global safety standards.
In June, the MoT revealed that it would supervise a pilot program in partnership with Mowasalat (Karwa), testing Level-4 electric robotaxis across selected tourist and service routes in Doha. The trial is designed in two stages: the first phase involves supervised operations without passengers, followed by a second phase offering fully autonomous rides with passengers.
Each vehicle is equipped with six long- and mid-range cameras, four radars, and four LiDAR sensors, enabling precise detection and safe navigation across urban environments.
The launch comes ahead of the Autonomous e-Mobility Forum 2026, taking place from April 7 to 9, 2026, which will gather industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators from over 25 countries to discuss the future of autonomous mobility, sustainability, and regulation.
These efforts are in line with the Third Qatar National Development Strategy (NDS3) and the Transportation Master Plan for Qatar-2050, both of which prioritize technological innovation, sustainable growth, and smart infrastructure integration.
By adopting autonomous mobility, Qatar strengthens its global standing as a leader in sustainable and innovative transportation, paving the way for a future of smarter, safer, and greener travel.
