At least nine people have been killed in a horrific school shooting in the southern Austrian city of Graz, according to early reports on Tuesday.
Several others were left injured, with authorities rushing victims to nearby hospitals.
“This is a terrible tragedy,” Graz Mayor Elke Kahr told Austrian press agency APA, confirming that numerous injured individuals had been hospitalized.
While Austrian police have yet to confirm an exact death toll, a spokesperson said that “several” lives were lost and the situation is now under control. “There is no further danger for the population,” the official told local TV.
Local outlet Kronen Zeitung reported that at least eight were dead on-site, with at least ten more seriously hurt. The publication also said the suspected shooter was found dead in a bathroom—though this has not yet been verified by police.
Ambulances and emergency responders were seen swarming the scene as the school was fully evacuated. Officials confirmed that relatives of the students and victims are receiving support and care. The area remains secured by law enforcement as investigations continue.
