US Moves to Label Muslim Brotherhood Chapters as Terrorist

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the State Department and Treasury to review certain Muslim Brotherhood chapters for designation under US counterterrorism laws. The focus is on groups outside Egypt that have allegedly joined or supported violent actions in the Middle East.

US officials cited activities including the Lebanese chapter working with Hamas and Hezbollah on rocket attacks against Israel, calls from Egyptian leaders for attacks on US partners, and Jordanian support to Hamas militants. The government says these actions threaten US civilians and regional security.

What the Executive Order Requires

The order gives the Secretary of State and Treasury 30 days to report which Brotherhood chapters should be designated. Within 45 days, the agencies must take action to formally label them as foreign terrorist organizations.

Once designated, the measures could freeze assets, block financial activity, and impose legal penalties on groups and individuals linked to these chapters. The order stresses all actions must follow US law and available funding.

Broader Context

The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928, has multiple chapters across the Middle East. While some operate politically or socially, US intelligence says others have armed wings or support militant networks.

If enacted, this would be one of the largest US actions against Brotherhood chapters, expanding Washington’s counterterrorism blacklist and affecting organizations and financial networks globally.
