Trump Warns India: Trade Deal or 25% Tariffs by August 1

Trump told reporters that India could face tariffs up to 25% if the two countries don't finalize a trade agreement by August 1. Talks have been ongoing for months but no deal has been signed yet.

India Called Out for High Tariffs

Trump said India charges more tariffs than almost any other country. “You just can’t do that,” he said, despite calling India a “good friend.” He has previously labeled India a “tariff king” and “big abuser” of trade terms.

No Official Notice Yet, But Pressure Is On

The US hasn’t sent India a formal tariff letter, but the warning adds pressure. Back in April, Trump announced up to 27% tariffs on Indian goods, but those were paused pending negotiations.

Trade Talks See Mixed Signals

Officials from both sides have shared mixed updates—sometimes optimistic, sometimes cautious. A US trade rep noted that while India is making progress, its policies have long been protectionist.

Agriculture Remains a Key Sticking Point

The US wants more access to India’s agricultural and dairy markets, but India remains firm, citing food security and farmers' welfare. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said farmers' interests will be “well protected.”

Still Hope for a Deal

Despite tensions, India says it’s optimistic about a deal. Goyal said talks are making “fantastic progress” and hopes remain high for a “consequential partnership.”
