Trump Delays TikTok Ban Again as Deal Talks Heat Up

TikTok users in the US can breathe a little easier—for now. President Donald Trump has once again delayed the ban on the Chinese-owned app, extending it until December 16. This is the fourth delay since January, keeping TikTok’s fate hanging while deal talks continue.

A mystery deal in the works

Trump said he has “a deal on TikTok” but didn’t spill the details or name the companies involved. Reports suggest Oracle, Silver Lake, and Andreessen Horowitz could play a role in running TikTok’s US operations, separating it from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.

What’s driving the ban

The ban was approved by Congress last year over concerns that TikTok could hand over user data to Chinese authorities. TikTok’s CEO Shou Zi Chew has denied this repeatedly, insisting the app is safe. Still, Washington remains cautious.

What’s next

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the new deal framework looks a lot like earlier negotiations and that national security safeguards are a must. Trump is expected to discuss the deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week, raising hopes for a final decision soon.
