India-Pakistan Ceasefire Rocked by Overnight Border Clash

A new ceasefire deal between India and Pakistan was put to the test just hours after it was announced, as heavy gunfire and shelling broke out along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir overnight.

Though the clashes eased by Sunday morning, the brief return of calm hasn’t erased the fear and doubt among residents living near the disputed border.

Ceasefire announced, then quickly broken

The agreement — meant to stop military action by land, sea, and air — was revealed on Saturday, following U.S.-brokered talks. But within hours, both nations accused each other of violating the deal.

Indian officials claimed there was drone activity over Indian-controlled Kashmir and Gujarat on Saturday night. At the same time, Pakistani locals in Neelum Valley, just three kilometers from the LoC, reported fresh shelling.

Chaos and fear on both sides of the border

In the Poonch district of Indian-administered Kashmir, college student Sosan Zehra described the night as "completely chaotic" as people scrambled for safety.

Over the border, Pakistani resident Mohammad Zahid said, “We were happy about the announcement but, once again, the situation feels uncertain.”

High-level meetings and more talks planned

The ceasefire announcement was first made by U.S. President Donald Trump via Truth Social, with confirmations from both Indian and Pakistani officials shortly after. However, India has not publicly acknowledged the U.S. role in the talks.

On Sunday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an emergency meeting with top military and government officials to assess the situation. Another round of talks between military leaders of both countries is expected on Monday.

Tense calm along the Line of Control

Despite the agreement, daily tension remains high. The LoC, dotted with bunkers, razor wire, and guard towers, continues to see regular clashes, with both sides blaming each other for starting the attacks — while insisting they only responded in defense.

The renewed violence has once again raised concerns over the fragile peace efforts between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
