We have all stood in a local supermarket queue clutching a single loaf of bread, eyeing the glowing self-service screens with a mix of hope and mild dread. It promises a swift exit, but we often end up trapped in a cycle of flashing red lights and computerised demands. A recent landmark study by the University of Leicester, titled Self-Checkout Loss Report 2026, reveals that while over half of our transactions now bypass human cashiers, these automated lanes might be costing supermarkets dearly, with retail losses rising by an average of 22% in their first year of deployment.
