Rashid Al Athba and Reem Al Sharshani lead Qatar to top podium finish at Lusail Shooting Complex.
Qatari shooters Rashid Saleh Al Athba and Reem Al Sharshani won the mixed team skeet gold medal at the Asian Shotgun Championships Doha 2026, currently being held at the Lusail Shooting Complex.
The championship, which runs until Wednesday, features 196 shooters from 17 countries competing across multiple shooting disciplines.
Friday’s mixed team skeet competitions delivered closely contested qualifying and final rounds. Qatar secured first place after hitting 47 targets, ahead of South Korea’s Jang Soo-Hwang and Koki Jang with 45 targets, while Kazakhstan’s Eduard Yashchenko and Asim Urnbay finished third with 39 targets.
With the latest victory, Qatar increased its skeet medal haul to six, including three gold and three silver medals. The skeet competitions are set to conclude later today.
Trap competitions set to begin
Official training sessions for the trap shooting events across all categories — men, women, juniors and youth — will begin today. The trap qualifying rounds are scheduled for Sunday, while individual finals and award ceremonies for junior and youth categories will take place on Monday.
The individual finals for men, women and mixed junior teams are set for Tuesday. The championships will conclude on Wednesday with the mixed team final, followed by the medal ceremonies for the top three finishers.
Officials praise team performance
Qatar Shooting and Archery Association (QSAA) Secretary General Jassim Shaheen Al Sulaiti, who also serves as the Championships Director, welcomed the national team’s strong performance.
“Our season started very strongly, with our athletes’ participation in the Asian Shotgun Championship. We managed to clinch six medals, and it’s a testament to the continuous work put in by the national team’s technical staff,” he said.
Al Sulaiti also credited the support of Qatar Olympic Committee President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani and QSAA President Dr Meshaal Ibrahim Al Nasr, highlighting the role of training camps and elite coaching in boosting performance.
“Our shooters are ready and are looking forward to continuing their success, similar to the skeet competition,” he said, referring to the upcoming trap events.
Focus shifts to World Championships
Looking ahead, Al Sulaiti said Qatar will host the World Shooting Championships in November 2027, which will serve as a qualification event for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
He added that the national team will prepare through a series of local, Gulf, Arab and continental competitions, leading up to the global championship to be staged in Qatar later this year.
