In a significant development, Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed resuming direct peace talks with Ukraine on May 15 in Istanbul, Turkey.
The proposal comes amid escalating tensions and ongoing conflict between the two nations.
Putin emphasized that the talks should proceed without any preconditions, stating, "We are proposing that Kyiv resume direct negotiations without any preconditions." He highlighted the need to address the root causes of the war and restore a "long-term, lasting peace" rather than a temporary ceasefire.
The Russian leader expressed his intention to discuss the facilitation of these talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, acknowledging Turkey's role as a mediator in previous negotiations.
The proposal has garnered attention from international leaders. U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed the initiative, describing it as a potential turning point in the conflict. He posted on Truth Social, "A potentially great day for Russia and Ukraine! Think of the hundreds of thousands of lives that will be saved as this never ending 'bloodbath' hopefully comes to an end."
However, skepticism remains among Western leaders. French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, during their visit to Kyiv, demanded an unconditional 30-day ceasefire from Russia, warning of "massive" new sanctions if Moscow fails to comply.
Despite the proposal for talks, hostilities continue on the ground. Ukrainian officials reported that Russian drone attacks targeted Kyiv and surrounding regions, causing injuries and damaging infrastructure.
The international community awaits Ukraine's response to Putin's proposal, as the prospect of renewed negotiations offers a glimmer of hope for a resolution to the protracted conflict.
