She was presented with the ‘Doha Best Negotiator of the Year’ Award, an annual recognition by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). The award celebrates individuals who have made outstanding contributions to international negotiation and peaceful mediation.

Why This Year’s Award Matters

According to HE Dr. Hend bint Abdalrahman Al Muftah, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, the 2024 edition of the award holds special significance. It was officially renamed the Doha Best Negotiator of the Year to reflect its announcement during the first-ever Doha World Negotiation Day, organized by UNITAR, ADN Group, and the Doha Forum.

The event brought together diplomats, ambassadors, and representatives of international organizations, all under one roof to celebrate a shared commitment to peace and diplomacy.

Qatar’s Longstanding Role in Mediation

In her speech, Dr. Al Muftah emphasized that organizing the ceremony fits squarely within Qatar’s longstanding commitment to negotiation, mediation, and peaceful conflict resolution. These values are not only part of the country’s foreign policy, they’ve been at the core of Qatar’s efforts on the global stage for over two decades.

From ceasefire agreements and diplomatic breakthroughs to humanitarian negotiations and peace deals, Qatar has acted as a neutral and reliable mediator in dozens of regional and international conflicts.

Why Grynspan Was Chosen

Rebeca Grynspan was recognized for her pivotal role in the Istanbul agreements, including the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which helped facilitate the export of millions of tons of grain from Ukraine. This had a massive impact on global food security, especially in low-income countries facing famine and shortages.

Dr. Al Muftah also praised Grynspan’s dedication to ethical diplomacy, highlighting her efforts to include human rights, environmental values, and fairness in negotiation processes, qualities that reflect what modern diplomacy should be.

A Shared Vision for Peace

During the ceremony, Grynspan expressed her deep gratitude to Qatar for the recognition and reaffirmed her commitment to working toward diplomacy that prioritizes humanity and global stability.

In closing remarks, Dr. Al Muftah acknowledged negotiators around the world who work tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to promote peace. She also reaffirmed Qatar’s ongoing role as a key international partner in supporting conflict resolution and dialogue.
