Trump to Pause Migration from Third-World Countries to Let US System ‘Recover’

US President Donald Trump announced that he will “permanently pause” migration from what he called “third-world countries,” saying the US system needs time “to fully recover.”
The statement came a day after a National Guard member was killed in a shooting near the White House. Investigators say the attack was carried out by an Afghan national, and Trump described it as “an act of terror.”

New Policies Aimed at Noncitizens

Trump also posted on Truth Social, saying he plans to cut all federal benefits and subsidies for noncitizens. He added that he wants to denaturalize migrants who “undermine domestic tranquility” and deport those he labels a public charge, security risk, or “non-compatible with Western civilization.”
He ended the message with Thanksgiving wishes—excluding, in his words, those who “hate, steal, murder, and destroy everything that America stands for.”

Afghan Immigration Cases Frozen

The immigration freeze comes just one day after the US halted all processing of Afghan-related immigration requests. Officials said the pause will remain until new security and vetting measures are reviewed.

A Harder Line Since Returning to Office

Since returning to power earlier this year, Trump has pushed for a tougher immigration stance—tight border controls, stricter enforcement, and quick rollbacks of policies from the previous administration.
