The pollution of the ocean with plastics has become one of the most popular topics of the environmental issues of the last decade. Pictures of floating debris tend to instill the sense of urgency in the large scale cleanup operations. Nonetheless scientists are also looking at the possibility of plastic elimination in the oceanic system posing unforeseen environmental effects. It is not the question of denying the pollution but the question of determining the actions of complex ocean systems in response to human intervention.
