Joe Biden Diagnosed With Aggressive Prostate Cancer

Former US President Joe Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer that has already spread to his bones, according to a statement from his office released on Sunday.

The diagnosis came after Biden visited his doctor last week for urinary symptoms. On Friday, he received confirmation of prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 9 out of 10, indicating a high-grade and fast-growing form of the disease. Doctors say this type of cancer can spread quickly, but there’s some hopeful news, it’s hormone-sensitive, which means it can likely be managed with ongoing treatment.

“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management,” his office said in the statement.

Biden and his family are currently reviewing treatment options with his medical team.

Support Pours In From Around the World

Since the announcement, public figures across political lines and international leaders have sent messages of support.

Former President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, expressing that he and former First Lady Melania Trump were "saddened" by the news and sent their best wishes to Biden and his family.

Vice-President Kamala Harris wrote on X that she and her husband, Doug Emhoff, are keeping the Bidens in their prayers.

“Joe is a fighter – and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership,” she wrote.

Barack Obama, who served with Biden from 2009 to 2017, also took to X, saying he and Michelle are thinking of the entire Biden family. He praised Biden’s past leadership in cancer research, referencing the "cancer moonshot" program Biden led in 2016. “Nobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe,” Obama said.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also commented, sending his best wishes to Biden and his loved ones.

What This Diagnosis Means

Doctors say a Gleason score of 9 is among the most severe ratings for prostate cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, cancer that has spread to bones is not considered curable, but can often be managed for many years with hormone therapy and other treatments.

Biden’s Health and Public Life

Biden has kept a low profile since leaving office in January 2025. He withdrew from the 2024 presidential race due to growing concerns over his age and health, especially after a difficult televised debate performance. He was replaced as the Democratic nominee by Kamala Harris.

A Long History With Cancer Advocacy

This diagnosis hits close to home for Biden. His son Beau passed away from brain cancer in 2015. Since then, Biden has been a leading advocate for cancer research. In 2022, he and his wife Jill relaunched the "Cancer Moonshot" initiative to help prevent millions of cancer deaths by 2047.

Now, as Biden faces this personal health battle, his legacy of advocacy and resilience continues to shape how he approaches the challenge ahead.
