The Philippines just rolled out a big update for its overseas domestic workers: a bump in the minimum monthly wage from USD 400 to USD 500. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said the change will be written into all new and renewed contracts moving forward.

Transition Period Announced

Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac explained that agencies and employers have 60 days to adjust to the new rule. After that, all contracts—whether for new hires or returning workers—must reflect the higher pay.

More Reforms on the Way

The wage increase isn’t the only change. The DMW also announced:

  • Annual medical check-ups (voluntary at first, mandatory later).

  • A new job category for caregivers, recognizing their specialized skills.

  • Video calls before contract signing, so workers can “know their employer” firsthand.

  • Launch of “Kumusta Kabayan?”, a digital welfare monitoring system.

Why It Matters

About 20–30% of overseas Filipino workers each year are domestic workers. These reforms aim to protect them better, ensure fair pay, and strengthen transparency between workers and employers.
